By turning the metal wheel, you make the rod rotate around its own axis. The angled orientation causes the ends of the rod to be further away from the axis of rotation than the middle of the rod.
Therefore, the slot ends must be further away from the axis of rotation than the center of the slot. In this case, this alignment then leads to the curved shape, also known as the Hyperbolic Slot. The straight rod can thus easily circle through the curved shape of the plate.
